1. About Subspotter

Subspotter subspotter.co.uk is a free daily geography puzzle game operated by Chelsea Gordon ("Subspotter" or "the operator"), an individual based in Scotland, United Kingdom. It was created as a personal fundraising project in support of Cancer Research UK. By accessing or using Subspotter you agree to these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account or use Subspotter. By registering, you confirm that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18, you should review these Terms with a parent or guardian.

3. Accounts

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account. Please notify the operator at hello@subspotter.co.uk if you believe your account has been compromised. Subspotter reserves the right to suspend or delete accounts that violate these Terms or that have been inactive for an extended period, without prior notice.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Attempt to manipulate scores, leaderboards, streaks, or any other game mechanic through automated means, scripts, or exploits;
  • Create multiple accounts to gain an unfair advantage;
  • Interfere with or disrupt the service, its servers, or its infrastructure;
  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose;
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the service or its underlying systems;
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or otherwise attempt to extract the source code of the service.
Subspotter reserves the right to remove, correct, or recalculate scores and streaks if the operator determines that unfair play or a technical error has occurred.

5. Donations

Subspotter contains links to a Cancer Research UK fundraising page hosted on fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org. Subspotter does not collect, process, or handle any donations or payments. All donations are made directly to Cancer Research UK via their own platform and are subject to their terms and privacy policy. Streak save bonuses granted as a thank-you for qualifying donations are applied manually and may take up to 48 hours. The operator reserves the right to withdraw or alter this arrangement at any time.

6. Third-Party Services

Subspotter uses the following third-party services. Your use of this site is also subject to their respective terms and privacy policies:

  • Google Maps Platform — used to display Street View imagery and interactive maps. Governed by Google's Terms of Service.
  • IONOS — used to send account-related emails (e.g. password resets, welcome emails). Your email address is shared with this processor solely for the purpose of sending these communications.
  • Hosting provider
Subspotter is not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or content of any third-party service.

7. Intellectual Property

All original content, code, design, and text on Subspotter is owned by the operator or used with permission. Street View imagery is the property of Google and its licensors. You may not reproduce, redistribute, or create derivative works from any part of Subspotter without the operator's prior written permission.

8. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

Subspotter is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. Subspotter does not warrant that:

  • the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times;
  • puzzle data, scores, streaks, or leaderboard positions are always accurate;
  • Street View imagery will be available for any given puzzle location.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, Subspotter, including but not limited to loss of scores, streaks, or data. This does not affect any rights you have as a consumer or any liability that cannot be excluded by law (including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation).

9. Service Availability and Changes

Subspotter may modify, suspend, or discontinue Subspotter (or any part of it) at any time without notice. The operator may also update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

10. Privacy and Data

Subspotter collects and processes personal data in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Please see the Privacy Policy for full details.

  • Data you provide
    When you register, Subspotter collects your name, email address, and password (stored as a hash). You may optionally provide your company and country, which are used to populate leaderboards.
  • Data generated by your use of the service
    Your daily puzzle guesses, scores, and streak data are stored and associated with your account. This data powers leaderboards and in-game features.
  • Account deletion and data retention
    You may delete your account at any time via your account settings. Upon deletion, your personal details (name, email, password) are permanently removed. Your historical score records are anonymised and retained to preserve leaderboard integrity and ensure historical scoring fairness. No anonymised score can be linked back to you.
  • Cookies
    Subspotter uses only essential cookies: session cookies to keep you logged in, and a CSRF token to protect form submissions from cross-site request forgery. No advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies are used. Essential cookies do not require your consent under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
  • Basic internal analytics (e.g. page visit counts) may be recorded server-side. This does not involve any third-party tracking services or the use of cookies beyond those listed above.
  • Email communications
    By registering, you will receive transactional emails (e.g. welcome email, password reset). You may also opt in to a weekly newsletter in your account settings. You can withdraw consent for newsletter updates at any time via your account or by emailing hello@subspotter.co.uk.
  • Your rights
    Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or port your personal data, and to object to its processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact the operator at hello@subspotter.co.uk. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
  • International users
    Subspotter is operated from the United Kingdom and is primarily intended for UK users. If you access the service from outside the UK, you do so at your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with local laws. EU residents retain their rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Scotland, United Kingdom. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Scottish courts, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer rights you hold under the law of your country of residence.
